FAQ

Is Pilates right for me?

Pilates is for everyone, from young to old, sedentary to athletic. It is for people who are strong or weak, flexible or inflexible. It is for pregnant women, is great for rehabilitation from injury, and is often recommended by doctors, physical therapists and chiropractors. Pilates can be used as a complete fitness program as well as a supplement to other methods of fitness, or as a tool to educate the body to have better posture, or to move in a more effective way.

What is the difference between machine or apparatus pilates and mat pilates ?

In machine pilates, you will work one-on-one with a certified instructor, who has been trained extensively to design a program and modify the exercises with your specific needs in mind. Your Instructor will move you from one piece of equipment to another, choosing from well over 500 exercises, after mutually assessing your specific needs and goals.

In mat pilates, you will be one of a group of 6-10 people, performing the same exercises, at the same pace. With a mat class, the instructor may only be able to occasionally give you specific instruction, based on your movement, and will direct the group as a whole. We recommend that you only do mat classes if you are without injuries, are relatively fit, have a good basic understanding of the pilates principles and  are pain-free. Since there is no apparatus in a mat class, you will look to your own body to create resistance, an amazing way to connect with and strengthen your core.

How do I begin a pilates program?

We recommend your first Pilates session be a private lesson. This will introduce you to the Pilates equipment, give you and the instructor an idea of where your body's strengths and weaknesses lie and provide the attention needed to formulate your goals. After your private session you will be more comfortable with the principles and philosophy of Pilates, and you and your teacher will decide how you will proceed from there.

How often should I do pilates?

Two to three times a week is a great amount. Like any form of exercise, consistency is key, and it is helpful to not let too much time pass in order to remember the previous lesson and incorporate the information in your body. You will be happy at how you look and feel after just a few weeks. It is also great to combine private lessons with duets and/or mat classes during the course of a week.

I have a medical condition or injury, is it still good for me to do pilates?

YES! The Pilates Method integrates into a rehabilitative exercise program to speed recovery from many medical conditions and injuries. We have doctors who refer patients to pilates instead of physical therapy because of the attention our instructors are able to give each client.

Can I do pilates if I'm pregnant?

YES! Pilates is awesome for pregnant women! Pilates is one of the most advantageous forms of exercise pre-natal and post-pregnancy, because of its focus on core control, and the muscles of the abdomen, back and gluts. As with any exercise program, and especially when pregnancy is concerned, please discuss any interest in establishing an exercise program with your doctor first! Is pilates good for cardiovascular improvement?

Pilates is and of itself is a form of anaerobic exercise. However, it can be taken to the cardiovascular level as you learn the exercises and advance with the work. In other words, in the beginning, you are learning the exercises, and how to do them properly and effectively. This takes time. So you may only perform eight to fifteen exercises in one hour. As you advance, and know the exercises, you will be able to do progress into other class types or similarly get through more exercises in one session.

Will pilates help me to lose weight?

Yes, it can help you lose weight. Weight is lost through a simple equation, that is, expend more energy than you consume. Pilates challenges the body in a whole host of ways prompting it to adapt, we also run a pilates challenge a few times a year and our participants not only lose weight but inches! they more importantly gain strength, control, flexability and many other attributes... a well rounded approach will always be better than a fitness regime based solely on weight loss.

What is a duet?

A duet is a pilates lesson for two people same as a "trio" is for three. It is great for those who like working out with a friend or family member. Sometime having a workout buddy can motivate you more to stay on track and gives competitive people some extra drive too!

Can I learn Pilates from a video?

While you can learn the choreography of the exercises from a video, it is unlikely that you will be performing them correctly. A certified teacher is there to help you focus on form and breathing techniques to be effective in your workouts. Reforming Indy has 1 Cadillac, 3 half trapeze reformers, 6 reformers, 2 ladder barrels, 3 wunda chairs, 3 exo chairs, 9 springboards as well as c-shapers, small arcs, spine correctors and a whole host of other helpful pieces. These apparatus are expensive and precise, the results achievable with the equipment and an experienced instructor are not even comparable with a do-it-yourself video.

How does Pilates differ from yoga?

Joseph Pilates was inspired by both eastern and western forms while developing his method, so there are many similarities. The breathing is different, and you are asked to pull your stomach in rather than allowing it to fill with breath. Pilates is also movement, rather than the holding of postures that is yoga.

How soon will I see results?

Every ‘body' is unique. Joseph Pilates stated, "In 10 sessions, you'll feel a difference, in 20 sessions, you'll see the difference, and in 30 sessions you'll have a different body. Real and lasting changes will happen over time, but more importantly, you'll leave every session or class feeling rejuvenated and energized.

What can I expect during a session at Reforming Indy?

Sessions and/or classes are 55-minutes unless otherwise noted. They are offered at the Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced level. Some classes are also open to all levels. Pilates is a workout, so be prepared to sweat! You can also expect a positive, supportive and knowledgeable instructor always ready and willing to help you succeed !
